Betula lenta

Native tree;  40–60 ft. featuring shiny bark; wintergreen‑scented twigs; golden fall color. Blooms April (catkins). Prefers sun to part shade and evenly moist soil.  A great tree for the naturalistic garden. Fall color is light yellow. Can be tapped like Sugar Maples in early spring and the fermented sap made into birch beer.
